Deriving its name from the local Acholi language meaning “daughter of the moon” which was given by the local tribes to Florence Baker, wife of historic explorer Samuel Baker whom together spent many months exploring the area along the Nile River in the 1880’s in what is today known as Murchison Falls National Park. Florence was revered by the local tribes and they named her such due to her pale skin and long, fair hair which appeared as beautiful as the moon at night, which she was known for sitting and gazing at on clear nights
